The Walled Garden owes its inspiration to the great Indo-Persian gardens of antiquity and is intended to mimic a paradise on earth. Like the ancient gardens, the Walled Garden is divided into quadrants by waterways and bordered by crenellated walls anchored by octagonal towers. A prominent feature are the two facing marble sphynxes sculpted by Paul Manship, one of the most famous sculptors of the time. These regal beings sit atop platforms supported by two tall Ionic columns of cipollino marble.
